The journey Fuzz has been on is one that we would never wish for any animal. Fuzz was adopted a year and a half ago, to a home that committed to love and care for him. So it was a shock when Fuzz was brought to our door in desperate need of help after his owners could no longer provide proper care.

It was clear that Fuzz endured months of neglect. Because his hair was so matted, our animal care staff gave him a haircut to remove all his matted fur. The matting was so bad, it was difficult to see his face, his tail appeared to be triple it’s actual size, and the fur around his legs were more than an inch thick. We also had to remove a flea collar that was matted into his fur. It was quite the spa treatment – it took over two hours to complete the haircut and you could instantly see the relief and happiness on Fuzz’s face. This sweet boy felt so much better and knew he was safe.

After sharing Fuzz’s story far and wide, we had a previous adopter reach out concerned that we were promoting the dog she had adopted in May! Our team quickly gave her a call to let her know that the dog she adopted, Boris, was not going anywhere, that we were actually promoting a Fuzz who just happened to be Boris’ twin!
Boris came in with a similar story to Fuzz, It was a typical day at the shelter in early May. Our staff was busy feeding our furry friends, cleaning their kennels and giving them lots of TLC. Their routine was interrupted suddenly when a woman approached with a stray dog she found while on a walk with her own dog. The woman stated that she may not have even seen the dog if her dog had not reacted to it when he saw it.

This little guy was in terrible condition. He was matted beyond belief, flea infested and emaciated. His nails were painfully overgrown (about an inch long) and some were growing into his paw pads. Our Dog Department Manager said this was one of the worst cases she has seen in over 15 years of shelter work. We knew under all those mats and mess was a handsome dog who desperately needed our help. We began the process of uncovering the sweet boy hiding under the mess.

We named the loving pup Boris. He was given the royal treatment by our dedicated veterinary technicians and dog department staff.

He got a much-needed shave and received a soothing bath. We cleaned his ears and eyes, gave him treatment for fleas, and his nails were trimmed. We also found out he is severely anemic, likely due to his severe flea infestation, and began his treatment for that as well. Right now, Boris is receiving fluids 3 times a day, B12 for anemia, two types of eye medication, and pain medication.

The extreme mats in Boris’s fur created “boots” around his feet, causing him to walk on his fur instead of his paw pads.

Now that his fur had been shaved and mats removed, Boris needed some time to adjust and learn how to walk normally again. His paw pads were very soft and sensitive from not being used.

In addition to all his medical treatment, Boris began receiving lots of loving care from our staff. He was comfortably residing in the Dog Department Office in our administration area and for a short period of time, moved to a loving foster home with a dedicated staff member.

Although we don’t know what Boris has been through, Faithful Friends Animal Society ensured that he was given the extra love, attention and care he deserved going forward.

After the phone call with Boris’ owner, she became inquisitive about Fuzz. Boris and Fuzz were not only twins, but they were the same age… making us wonder if they could possibly be related. Both came in as strays, matted beyond recognition after enduring neglect. Boris’ owner, Linda, knew that she had to bring Fuzz home! Both Boris and Fuzz are now living the life with their retired mom who spoils them beyond belief!
