Protecting Your Pet From Ticks

Warm weather spells for lots of time outside in the sun! But it also spells the chance of your furry one becoming the victim to ticks.

Ticks are tiny parasites that are mostly found in wooded areas and transmit a series of illnesses through bites. A tick bite can affect humans and animals, so it’s important that both preventative measures are in place for both you and your furry friend!

Here are some tips on how to detect the presence of ticks and what preventative measure you can put in place to protect you and your pet:

What To Look For

  • Move your hands through your pet’s fur starting from the top of their head to the tip of their tail
  • Look closely at your pet’s fur if you feel or see a bump by parting it in adequate lighting

How To Remove A Tick

  • Grab a pair of tweezers if you see a tick and place it as close as possible to your pets skin to grab the tick
  • Pull upward with steady motion and consistent pressure to make sure the tick is completely removed
  • Disinfect the area with pet-safe ointment or solution once the tick is removed

What Preventative Measures To Put In Place

  • Use flea and tick prevention treatments year-round
  • Groom your pet regularly
  • Always check your furry friend after they come in from outside or socializing with other animals
  • Remember to check your clothes and body as well after being outdoors and/or with other animals

If you feel uncomfortable removing a tick or have any concerns, always speak with your vet care team or vet hospital staff!
