A Major Win for Ducks and Geese

The city of Portland, Oregon, has approved a ban on the sale of foie gras produced from force-fed birds, despite opposition from the industry.
Foie gras, meaning “fatty liver,” has long been criticized for the inhumane production process, which involves force-feeding ducks or geese through tubes inserted into their throats, causing their livers to become enlarged and diseased.
Portland’s ban will take effect on December 1, 2026, with violations carrying fines of up to $5,000. Animal welfare advocates have celebrated the decision as an important step forward for farmed birds. The ban follows years of advocacy efforts and comes on the heels of a similar victory in New York, where a court upheld New York City’s foie gras ban earlier this year
